Introducing Our Inspiring New Head of PE: Ms Ellery

22 April 2024

It is with great excitement that we introduce Ms Ellery, our new Head of Physical Education! With her wealth of experience, passion for sports and dedication to student development, we are thrilled to welcome her to the Windermere School community.

Growing up in the Lake District, Ms. Ellery’s love for sport blossomed at an early age. She proudly represented our county, Cumbria, in six different sports, showcasing her talent and dedication to athletic pursuits.

Ms. Ellery’s pursuit of excellence then led her to Durham University, where she embarked on an academic and athletic journey gaining a First Class Degree in Sport. Here, she not only excelled in her studies but also captained the university’s netball team, demonstrating her leadership skills both on and off the court.

It was during her time at Durham University that Ms. Ellery’s passion for rugby took root. Earning a prestigious rugby scholarship, she then went on to study an MSc in Management.

Her dedication and skill saw her rise through the ranks, culminating in a remarkable achievement: representing England in Rugby. What makes her journey even more special is that she and her brother made history as the first-ever siblings to represent England  7’s, a testament to their shared talent and determination.

Following her remarkable achievements in rugby, Ms. Ellery embarked on a journey that took her across the globe, playing and teaching sports in diverse settings. Her experiences in the state, international, and private sectors have equipped her with a unique perspective and a breadth of expertise that will undoubtedly enrich the educational experience of our students.

Though she has hung up her rugby boots, Ms. Ellery’s love for sports continues unabated. Her favourite pastimes now include surfing, running and wild swimming, reflecting her adventurous spirit and love for the outdoors. We are honoured and excited to welcome such an exceptional teacher and role model to Windermere School.

And in Ms. Ellery’s own words:

School PE is one of the most important foundational experiences of any young person, and I am immensely passionate about ensuring that it is a joyful one – that paves the way for a long, healthy, active life. My vision for sport at Windermere is that it will provide a space in which every single individual can thrive, be challenged, gain confidence and key skills that will aid them in school and beyond.

There are so many factors that drew me to Windemere school. For me, it epitomises what the Lake District is all about: unforgettable experiences, adventure, challenge, wellbeing, beauty, a strong sense of community and nurturing great thinkers.

One week in, I have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know the school and its vibrant international community . When I asked my new classes what their weekends entailed, every response involved being active and outdoors, that’s when I knew I’d found a community that I’m thrilled to be part of. After nearly 15 years of living away, it is truly great to be home!”
