Hodge Howe Sailing Centre
Windermere School and Windermere Preparatory School benefit from their own lakefront watersports centre, Hodge Howe, which is located right on the shores of Windermere. It is only minutes from the two main campuses and provides a wide range of opportunities for pupils during the school's timetabled curriculum, and as part of the extra curricular activity programme in the evening and at weekends.
Hodge Howe has accreditation from the BCU (British Canoeing Union) and the Adventure Activities Licensing Authority, as well as being a RYA (Royal Yachting Association) Teaching Centre. The Watersports Centre has an enclosed pavilion with changing and teaching facilities, a small kitchen, showers, wet and dry boathouses, a sheltered harbour and beach landing area. It has been recently licensed to hold weddings and provides a beautiful waterfront setting.
The staff and pupils also enjoy Hodge Howe as a venue for teambuilding and overnight camping on the level lawn; this works especially well for our younger students to develop outdoor skills with the comforts of the pavillion ready and waiting if needed.
Bustling with activity, it is well equipped with toppers, lasers, wayfarers, canoes and kayaks as well as wetsuits and spray-tops for pupils to use. There is capacity for operating four groups at any particular time. Two groups work from the boathouse area and two further groups are accommodated from the beach. Staff operate with a maximum of six pupils per group for teaching sailing, and a maximum of eight for teaching kayaks or expert level groups.
The school recently purchased 10 new boats to add to the fleet.
