Junior Outdoor Education

At Windermere, pupils in Years 1 and 2 have weekly Forest School sessions with our Level 3 qualified instructor in our wonderful wooded grounds. From Years 3 to 6 our students experience two hours of Adventure! as part of their timetable.

The School has been operating for a number of years as both a British Canoe Union and Royal Yachting Associating (RYA) Training Centre, and the successful application in 2014 for RYA Champion Club status, now brings the Centre into alignment with the whole school ethos, ‘to be the best small school in Britain’.

During the summer months, we follow the RYA Youth Sailing schemes and British Canoe Union Paddlepower awards. By the time the children leave the Junior School, at eleven years old to move up to Senior School, most are working towards their RYA Stage 3 and Paddlepower Discovery (BCU 2 Star). During the winter months, our students compete in Orienteering events, complete their Bikeability Level 2 Award, and learn Mountain Leader and survival skills on the Lakeland Fells.

Indoors and outdoors at Windermere, we introduce the children to the world of climbing and abseiling by working towards the National Indoor Climbing Achievement Scheme Level 1 (Foundation Climber) Award forming part of our Log Book scheme. Each child completes their own Adventure Log which is aimed at encouraging and developing children’s skills.

At Windermere, our Adventure programme incorporates not only water-based sports but outdoor adventure on the beautiful Lakeland Fells that surround our School. Outdoor adventure includes camping, fell and mountain walking, survival skills, navigation, and orienteering. The Elleray Adventure Award consists of ten elements and pupils must achieve certain standards in each element to receive a Bronze, Silver and ultimately Gold Compass Badge. They record all their achievements in a Log Book. This can be as part of their Adventure lessons or extra-curricular time at School; with their family or with an external provider. All this is being delivered through a unique scheme written by the School, the Elleray Adventure Awards.
