We are proud to be accredited by the British Council. The Accreditation Scheme assesses the standards of management, resources and premises, teaching and welfare and accredits organisations which meet the overall standard in each area inspected. More information on this can be found on the British Council website. Strengths were noted in areas of staff management, student administration, quality assurance, premises and facilities, learning resources, academic management, course design, learner management, teaching, care of students, leisure opportunities, care of under-18s. The inspection report stated that the organisation met the standards of the Scheme.
Our excellent English tuition sets a consistently high academic standard. English language classes take place in the morning, with students receiving 17.5 – 21 hours of academic tuition each week. On average there are 10 students in a class, and we never exceed 13 students per teacher. All of our English teachers are qualified to at least CELTA/TEFL level or equivalent, with all being at native level proficiency. All students attending more than one course will have the opportunity to sit the Trinity College London’s GESE Examination.
Upon arrival in Windermere, each student undertakes a placement test to ensure they are grouped by ability, as well as age. Our teachers are very experienced and use a variety of techniques and styles to deliver their classes. We believe that consolidation is fundamental to success within the English language. In addition to three hours of English classes, we run academic workshops and educational trips allowing students the opportunity to contextualise the language learnt in the classroom. These also enable teachers to adapt the syllabus and style to focus on specific needs of each student. At Windermere, considerable emphasis is placed on communication. All staff will encourage students to speak only in English, which allows the student to gain confidence in speaking.
Throughout our courses we run English educational trips. Students complete interactive tasks which require them to use their English language skills. Our English educational trips show students the cultural highlights of the local area.
Students who join the three-week course, starting on 1 July 2019, will have the opportunity to take this exam. It is an ability based, oral examination which takes around 10 minutes. It is an excellent and formal way of concluding the hard work of the previous weeks of the course. Successful students will receive a certificate confirming that this internationally recognised exam has been taken. There are 12 levels from Absolute Beginner to Full Speaker and additional workshops and individual tutorials are held to assist students. The exam is set to reflect the achievements of our standard International Summer School English Syllabus. For the past four years, all students taking this exam have passed, and many have achieved a distinction!
During the afternoons, students from the International and Holiday Courses come together for the activity and social programme. The activities take place in the beautiful Lake District countryside using our wonderful natural environment as our playground. Each activity is led by experienced instructors, and we ensure safety of the students is of the highest priority whilst making the activity as fun as possible.
Students can choose activities from the following options below:
|Summer School Activities|
|Mountain Walking||Ghyll Scrambling|
|Paddleboarding||Arts and Crafts|
Upon arrival, all students are divided into Houses (teams). Houses are mixed in age and nationality. Each evening students participate in sports matches, group games and art challenges to win points for their houses. Examples include the WISS Fashion Show, WISS Carnival, and, of course, the end of course disco! In addition, each boarding house has a large common room where students can play pool, table football, computer games, or watch a DVD.
We welcome students to stay for multiple courses. They gain confidence and improve their English skills. For students staying in between courses, we run daily activities and excursions. Examples include visits to waterparks, bowling alleys, cinema trips and more. We arrange further local activities according to the group participants. Please note that, in order to provide high quality activities, the School has formed links with several well established providers. If, as a result of changes outside the control of the School or for any other reason it is deemed necessary to modify the activity programme, the School reserves the right to cancel, restrict and/or change activities.
Windermere Summer Schools are well-placed for exploring the North of England. The Lake District, UNESCO World Heritage Site, attracts millions of visitors each year, drawn by its dramatic landscape and rugged beauty. Students have excursion days where they visit famous British cities. Each course will visit a different city: York, Edinburgh, Liverpool or Manchester are likely destinations. There will be the opportunity for students to explore the Lake District National Park and experience the beauty it holds. In the evenings students work together to win points for their House through team games, sports fixtures and art competitions. There are also craft evenings, film nights, opportunities to visit the local town and, of course, the end-of-course disco! Our activity and adventure programme is constantly developing. We invite you to join us and see where your adventure will take you.
The welfare of our students is paramount to us. We employ a full-time residential Welfare Officer to look after our students’ needs. Several members of the team are also first-aid qualified. Our students are well cared for, receive round the clock supervision, and our small student-staff ratios ensure the best care possible.
Yes, however, we find that calls to or from parents can bring on home-sickness. We would, therefore, ask parents to encourage students to make their stay with us a parent free time. An emergency contact number will be provided with the pre-departure information. During the Summer Schools, staff can be contacted 24 hours a day in case of an emergency.
Most students want to bring mobile phones, tablets (iPads) or laptops to our Summer School. Students can use these during free time. Please note the school cannot take any responsibility for lost or broken phones, tablets or laptops and therefore students bring these at their own risk. However again we would encourage students to leave these at home and enjoy their time here without them. Students will be given their own personal login details to access school computer and the school WiFi network. Mobile phones and other devices are not allowed after 10pm, and must be handed in to staff overnight, and during classes. Students are permitted to use their devices during activities to take photographs.
Windermere International Summer School puts in place an insurance policy for every individual student on the course, specifically designed to cover international students on summer language schools within the UK. The exact details of which can be provided by the school yet in brief the policy provides insurance in respect to personal injury, personal liability and medical expenses. We do recommend the student has their own travel insurance.
Boys and girls are accommodated in single sex dormitories within the school grounds. We have bedrooms ranging from single rooms to seven students. Generally speaking, older students share with less students.
Students of the same nationality are not usually accommodated in the same room, to encourage mixing and developing English language skills. In some circumstances, this may not be possible.
Our well-equipped boarding houses provide comfortable home-from-home accommodation. Complete with cosy common rooms for relaxation and recreation, and equipped with various books, games, pool table, table football, air hockey and flat screen televisions. Students have full access to well-equipped kitchens for beverages and snacks. A laundry service is offered free of charge.
We provide plenty of fresh, healthy food, prepared daily by the school’s chefs. There is always a choice of hot and cold options at breakfast, lunch and dinner. When the weather permits we also have barbecues on the terrace, and we provide packed lunches when we are off site.
Students arrive on the first day of the course and depart on the final day.
Airport meet and greet
We can meet your child in the arrivals hall at Manchester Airport, or Liverpool Airport, and transfer them to Windermere Summer School. Please note that Manchester is closer to Windermere and we, therefore, suggest flying to Manchester Airport. We will return your child to the airport at the end of their stay, and remain at the airport until the flight has departed. This transfer service to/from Manchester International Airport is included in the course fees. To make use of this service, students must be booked on flights arriving and departing between 9am and 6pm.
Parents are welcome to bring their children directly to the school. Our staff will welcome you to the school and we will have light refreshments available between 10am and 4pm.
We can transfer students to Oxenholme Train Station which is on the main line to London. If you are considering this option we recommend that you book direct trains well in advance. We can also arrange collection/drop-off at other UK airports, and at other times of day, however we will pass on a charge for this. Please contact us if you are considering this option.
The terms and conditions can be found within the booking forms on the How to Apply page.
The first time my daughter and I visited the school she said to me “that is a happy school no question.” The scholastic achievements of the school are evident and an easy measure for a school to demonstrate. What is hard to quantify is the holistic development of a pupil at which, in my experience, Windermere School excels.
Windermere School is such a unique community to be a part of. Not only is it based in a truly beautiful and inspiring national park, but the environment created by staff and students alike makes for an incredibly supportive, proactive, exciting and international place of learning in which everyone can thrive and be the best they can be.
