As a Round Square School, we support a number of service projects both locally and internationally. Community service in schools and international projects in developing countries educates students in the importance of serving others. The projects which we support include:
Young Carers Holiday Each year, we hold a holiday for the Young Carers of South Lakeland; young people aged 8 upwards who are either primary or secondary carers in their homes. The holiday allows them to have some free time away from the responsibilities of their everyday lives.
‘Life Change South Africa’ – Tiger Kloof This international service project takes place each February half term. We visit Tiger Kloof School in South Africa where we participate in community projects in Huhudi and Coleridge townships in conjunction with Wellington College. Whilst visiting the townships you will be expected to participate in a number of projects which may include: Maggie’s Soup Kitchen – this inspirational lady works for her community by running and setting up soup kitchens in the townships. We help by providing the resources to enable her to feed up to 1200 children a week. You will be expected to prepare the food and serve it to the children in the townships and we may also visit the local dump. Thusanang Disabled Centre – a project we have been involved with since 2003. We go to the centre and undertake any physical jobs required. In 2010, we cleared a large part of their grounds to enable them to enlarge the vegetable patch that we created a few years ago. We also interact with the students as much as possible. Emmanuel Pre-Primary and Soup Kitchen – this will involve preparation of the food and serving it to the children as well as playing with them and also the possibility of helping to build some additional resources. These opportunities are available to students in Year 11 and 12 and the average cost is approximately £1550 per person.
