Culinary Challenge: A True Test of Skill and Knowledge for Year 10 & 11 Food & Nutrition Pupils
2 May 2025
The Year 10 and 11 Food and Nutrition pupils recently undertook a rigorous two-part practical exam that tested not only their culinary skills, but also their ability to plan, organise and apply a wide range of theoretical knowledge.
Each pupil was randomly assigned a practical exam question in alphabetical order, with no option to choose or swap—a true test of adaptability! Their first task was a 1.5-hour planning session, during which they had to design a menu of five dishes that demonstrated a variety of preparation, cooking and presentation skills. In addition, pupils were expected to show clear understanding of nutrition and health, along with social and economic influences on food choices.
This planning phase also required them to create a detailed time schedule that covered all preparation and cooking methods, alongside a fully costed and categorised shopping list. It was not just a culinary challenge, but one that stretched their mathematical and organisational abilities as well.
One week later, the pupils returned to the kitchen for the practical element: 2.5 hours to produce all five dishes to a high standard. Their final creations were assessed on cooking skill, presentation and sensory qualities such as taste, texture, and aroma.
This is an incredibly demanding exam—one that would challenge even the most experienced cooks—and we are exceptionally proud of the dedication, creativity, and resilience shown by our pupils throughout this process.
Well done to all of our Year 10 & 11 Food & Nutrition pupils! Your determination is second to none and we are so proud of you.
