Nestling in the Lake District fells, the School offers boarders the chance to learn and live in a less hectic and more peaceful environment.

Boarding at Windermere School is unique and thriving, as we really focus on the needs of pupils and their families. Our weekly boarding option is very popular. Boarders can devote themselves to their studies during the week in order to spend precious time at home with parents and siblings at the weekends.

Senior boarders enjoy the independence of living away from home while being part of a large community of staff and pupils with who they share this unforgettable experience with.

The weekend programme is packed with trips to the theatre, tours of the area, shopping expeditions, and leisure activities such as bowling and roller-blading. Boarders form strong friendships with day pupils who regularly join in with the weekend activity programme.

We have three boarding houses, set within our Lake District woodland campus and each House has its own distinctive feel. They each offer a home away from home experience, with comfortable lounges to relax with friends, widescreen TVs, and kitchens. There are quiet areas for prep, with academic tutors’ schedule each evening providing specialist subject tuition.

Weekends and Activities

We offer regular craft workshops, watersports activity sessions, sports (including sporting fixtures) and games. Evening entertainment such as discos, barbecues, quizzes, films and karaoke are a regular feature, with everyone encouraged to join in the fun and games. We also understand the importance of home life and students are free to go home on weekends whenever they are able, by arrangement with their House.

Boys aged 8 to 16 years board at Langdale House, a lodge style boarding house with an impressive common room featuring a timber deck balcony to take in the stunning mountain views. It is an excellent combination of traditional boarding with modern conveniences, with suites and double and single rooms allocated for each age group.

There is a great social scene at Langdale, with its large common room and timber deck, as well as smaller common rooms for each age group. Housemaster, Mr Mark Winter and his assistant, Mr Ryan Hill, have developed an atmosphere of both fun and structure. In the early evening academic tutors are at Langdale to offer extra tuition, which the boys find very beneficial. They are also able to participate in a host of extra-curricular activities.

Boarders are able to make the most of their time at Langdale House, forming lifetime friendships and gaining independence

As in all the boarding houses full, weekly, and flexi options are available to suit family preferences.

Browhead is the home of girls boarding for ages 8 to 16 years. The suites, double and single rooms, are tucked away on the upper floors of our grand main building overlooking the lake.

Each age group has its own common room for relaxation, quiet areas for prep, and well-equipped kitchens. There is 24 hour supervision from the Housemistresses, Mrs Dalzell and Mrs Monk, to ensure health and well-being.

The Browhead boarders have a well balanced schedule, with after-school sports and activities available every day until 5.30pm. After dinner, early evenings (during the week) are spent doing prep in quiet areas, where there are academic Tutors available to offer assistance. Weekends are packed with sports fixtures, clubs, and activities to suit all interests. The School has a strong cohort of day pupils, who integrate well with our boarding students and take part in evening and weekend activities.

Guardianship Services

Windermere School is now offering a full range of Guardianship Services, which are aimed at providing our international pupils with safe and secure School managed ‘home accommodation’, and an enhanced care and support provision. Parents who take up this option overcome the sometimes difficult responsibility of supporting a child whilst residing in another part of the world, with the knowledge that the entire service is operated by the School and no agencies are involved. Host families within South Lakeland are available to look after our international pupils, as required, and each are vetted to very high standards.
