Year 7’s First Residential: A taste of the Adventures still to come
12 September 2024
Our Year 7 pupils recently had an unforgettable residential trip, packed with adventure, challenges and a lot of fun. It was a fantastic opportunity for them to push their limits, build friendships, and develop important life skills, setting the tone for the rest of their time at Senior School.
Wednesday: Rock Climbing at Diamond Crag The residential kicked off with rock climbing at Diamond Crag in Eskdale. For many, it was a chance to test their physical and mental strength. Even those who were apprehensive about heights gave climbing a go, encouraged by their peers. One of the standout moments was seeing pupils support one another through belaying—safely guiding each other up and down the crag. Half of the group tackled the ropes, while the other half explored bouldering, where they scrambled over rocks near the crag without the need for ropes, staying close to the ground but still pushing themselves.
After a day of rock adventures, the group arrived at Wasdale Hall Youth Hostel, a charming old building nestled at the southern tip of Wast Water. After settling in, the evening was spent playing games in the nearby woods, allowing everyone to unwind and bond after an exciting day.
Thursday: Harter Fell Adventure Thursday brought wild weather with strong winds predicted at up to 40mph, sparking an important discussion with the group about safety and the need to adapt plans in challenging conditions. Instead of climbing Scafell Pike as originally planned, the group took on Harter Fell, a fantastic scrambling peak in Eskdale. The scramble up the mountain was full of excitement and every pupil embraced the challenge, with many feeling proud of how they conquered the tough terrain. It was a day of adventure that will be remembered by all.
In the evening, the group returned to the hostel for a refreshing swim in Wast Water, the deepest lake in England. Equipped with buoyancy aids, everyone enjoyed splashing around in the cool waters. The lovely Mrs Cooke joined us for the night and was excitedly welcomed into the group.
Friday: Water Adventures at Doctor Bridge On the final day, Year 7 explored Doctor Bridge, a part of the river lined with rocks of varying heights, perfect for jumping into the water. The day began with a discussion about water safety, including the importance of being aware of cold water shock, checking underwater for obstacles like rocks and trees, and always having a safety plan in place. Equipped with wetsuits and buoyancy aids the pupils built up their confidence by jumping from lower rocks before progressing to higher jumps.
For the bravest among the group, the ultimate challenge was the 6-meter jump from the bridge—a thrilling experience for those who took the plunge!
Reflecting on the Week The trip ended with a reflective discussion about how the Year 7 pupils had demonstrated many of the key Round Square discoveries, which form the basis of their merit system. They practiced communication, problem-solving, responsibility, teamwork, courage and self-awareness—skills that will serve them well throughout their time at Senior School and beyond.
It was a brilliant few days away, filled with laughter, learning, and bonding. A huge thank you to our Adventure Team for always providing our pupils with the most fantastic experiences.
