Windermere School’s New Initiative: Phones Locked During the Day, Learning Unlocked

11 September 2024

In an exciting new development, Windermere School has introduced a new policy to limit mobile phone usage during school hours. This move is set to revolutionise the school environment, placing a strong emphasis on face-to-face communication, focused learning and the mental health of pupils.

The new policy, which goes into effect this term, requires pupils to lock their phones in specially designed Yondr pouches upon arrival at school. These pouches remain sealed throughout the day and are only opened by staff at the end of the school day, allowing pupils to use their devices as they leave school. The initiative, inspired by growing concerns over the negative impact of excessive mobile phone use among young people, is receiving widespread support from both parents and educators.

Mobile phones have already been banned for primary and secondary schools in France, after a government drive to promote focus and prevent online bullying.

At the heart of Windermere School lies a commitment to the wellbeing and mental health of its pupils. Studies have shown the detrimental effects that heavy phone usage can have on young people’s mental health, with issues such as anxiety, depression and disrupted sleep patterns on the rise. By removing the distraction of mobile phones during school hours, Windermere is creating a space for pupils to feel safe, be more present, less anxious and better connected with their peers and teachers.

One of the most significant benefits anticipated by the new policy is improved concentration in the classroom. Studies have shown that the presence of mobile phones, even when not in use, can reduce pupils’ ability to focus and retain information. By eliminating phones from the learning environment, Windermere School expects to see increased attention spans, better engagement in lessons and ultimately, improved academic performance.

Yondr recently surveyed over 900 school partners to measure the effects of creating phone-free educational environments. These schools achieved notable progress in multiple areas: 65% of schools saw an improvement in academic performance, 72% of schools saw an improvement in pupil behaviour, 84% of schools saw an improvement in pupil engagement in the classroom, 86% of schools saw a positive impact on pupil safety and wellness.

Head, Frank Thompson said “I am very excited about the potential this initiative has for improving children’s wellbeing in school. When you choose a school like Windermere, you are choosing a school for its opportunities and values. Teenagers are very receptive to the attitudes and values of those around them. In controlling the volume of social media content your children receive, we are giving them the space to absorb more positive messages from those around them in the physical world and particularly during the school day.”

Windermere School’s new mobile phone policy represents a forward-thinking approach to enhancing pupil wellbeing, academic performance and social connections. By creating a phone free environment, the school is fostering a space where pupils can thrive academically and personally —preparing pupils not just for school, but for life beyond the classroom.

What our community think

“I can whole heartedly say the new mobile phone policy at Windermere School works. One week into the new academic year and my children now voluntarily leave their mobile phones at home. As a result, their moods have dramatically improved, concentration and attention spans have increased, interests in old hobbies have been reignited” – Year 9 Parent

“While it may initially cause worry I believe this initiative will ultimately provide our children with a great sense of relief and skills to take with them into the working world” – Sue Brown, Head of Safeguarding & Wellbeing

“My son is entering his GCSE year and is excited that the pressure to keep up with events on his phone throughout the day has been lifted. As a parent it’s easy to ring the school office to pass on messages to your children such as that your late for pick up etc” – Year 11 Parent

“We hope that this policy will allow our daughter to remain a child for longer!” – Year 7 Parent
