A Journey Around Ullswater – DofE Bronze Final Expedition
13 June 2025
Ullswater way 10 to 11th June 2025
With training completed in April, the groups were ready and well prepared for their final expedition, bringing to a close the expedition module of the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award.
Bags were checked and kit given out on Tuesday morning before loading the buses and driving to Pooley Bridge to start our walk. Groups set off in different directions, either on the west or East side of the lake. One group, mentioning no names, set off on a loop of a small hill, ending back at the start… before setting off again in the right direction. Groups all had different styles, with some heading off as fast as possible to get to camp early or first, while other groups took their time, resting, eating, and enjoying the freedom of the expedition.
The weather was kind over both days and allowed for a very staggered arrival at Side Farm campsite. Tents were pitched, and food was cooked on Trangia stoves. There was a great mix of meals, from army rations to Bolognese pasta and mashed potatoes. Part of completing the award is about camp craft and skills; all the groups did well in this aspect, with the midges driving everyone to their tents around 10 p.m.
Sunday was a 7 a.m. wake-up, with the plan being that groups could leave as soon as they were ready. Everyone was away by 9 a.m., maps in hand and bags slightly lighter than the previous day. The Ullswater Way is a beautiful walk with some fantastic views. Some small navigation errors were made on the Sunday but were mostly resolved by the groups themselves.
However there was one exception were one group (no names mentioned ) found them selves in head high rushes and knee deep water convinced that they were on the path… I managed to convince them to turn back and follow the signs…..
We were all at the start finish by 3pm with tired feet and a good sense of achievement. Loading buses we drove back to Hodge Howe for a sort of tents and equipment and a well earned swim.
All the Bronze cohort have now passed their expedition module well done.
Many thanks to Mr Platt and Mrs Roberts for supporting the expedition.
