The Wonderful Poppy Project
23 September 2025
Back in March, Windermere School Year 6 children began something truly special – creating the frames for our giant poppies. These frames then travelled to local primary schools, where pupils worked together to bring them to life.
In total, 16 stunning giant poppies were made and displayed in the Windermere War Memorial Gardens for VE Day, alongside 1,700 knitted poppies lovingly made by local ladies. Each poppy was lit from within, glowing brightly on VE night.
This project was made possible thanks to funding from the Co-op and the incredible creativity of community artist Donna Campbell, commissioned by the Bowness & Windermere Community Care Trust.
Just last week, we transported the poppies to Kendal where they were given new lights and are now ready for their next chapter. This weekend, children from Old Hutton School will carry them to lead the annual Torchlight Parade — in loving memory of their friend, Poppy Atkinson.
Being part of this project has been such an honour.
