FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Frequently Asked Questions: Boarding at Windermere School
Navigating the world of boarding can feel like a bit of a trek, but we’re here to make the path clear. Whether you’re considering our Weekly Boarding option for that Manchester-to-Lakes lifestyle or looking at full-time residency, here are the answers to the questions we hear most often.
The Big Questions
Do students share rooms?
Building friendships is the heartbeat of boarding life. Generally, our younger boarders share rooms (usually two to four students), which helps them settle in and build lifelong bonds. As students move up through the school and into the International Baccalaureate (IB) years, we move towards twin or single study-bedrooms to provide the extra privacy and quiet needed for senior exams.
What happens at weekends?
For our Weekly Boarders, Friday afternoon is all about the “home run.” Most students head back to Manchester or surrounding areas on our supervised transport to spend quality time with family.
For our Full Boarders, the weekends are anything but quiet! We make the most of our Lake District location with:
- Organised trips to local towns or cinema visits.
- Outdoor adventures like hiking, sailing, and mountain biking.
- Themed dinners and social events in the boarding houses.
Is there a lot of “homework stress” in the evenings?
In a word: No. We replace the kitchen-table battles with supervised “Prep” sessions. Academic staff are available to help, and because everyone is working at the same time, it becomes a focused, productive habit rather than a chore. Once Prep is over, the evening is for relaxing.
Practicalities & Life on Campus
How does the Manchester transport work?
We aim to make the commute as invisible as possible. We provide a supervised minibus service that departs from a central Manchester location on Sunday evening ofrMonday mornings and returns on Friday afternoons. It’s a great time for students to catch up with friends or have a quick nap before the weekend starts.
What is the food like?
No “stodgy school dinners” here. Our catering team provides nutritious, balanced meals with plenty of variety. We cater to all dietary requirements and always ensure there’s a “taste of home” on the menu. Boarding houses also have kitchenettes for making toast, fruit, or the occasional evening hot chocolate.
Can my child stay in touch easily?
Of course. While we encourage students to be “present” and off their screens during activities and Prep, there is dedicated time every evening to call home. We find that after the first week, students are often so busy with their friends they forget to call—which is usually a sign they are having a brilliant time!
Health & Wellbeing
Who looks after my child if they feel unwell?
Each boarding house has a dedicated Houseparent and a team of tutors who live on-site. We also have a qualified Matron and a dedicated medical room. If a student feels under the weather, they are cared for in a homely environment until they are back on their feet.
Is it safe?
The safety of our students is our absolute priority. Our campus is self-contained, secure, and situated in a peaceful area of the Lake District. With staff living on-site 24/7, there is always a friendly, responsible adult nearby.
Still have a question?
We’d love to chat. Our Admissions team is always on hand to discuss your family’s specific needs or to arrange a “taster night” so your child can experience the Windermere magic firsthand.
Come for a taster
The best way to experience boarding life at Windermere is to come for a taster night or two. Everyone is welcome.
