Year 12 Students Achieve Dinghy Instructor Qualification

25 November 2025

We are delighted to celebrate the outstanding achievements of two of our Year 12 students, Jim and Isaac, who recently completed their Dinghy Instructor qualification at Hodge Howe, our school’s dedicated water sports centre on Windermere.

The course took place over the October Half Term and brought together both internal and external candidates for an intensive and rewarding training experience. Throughout the week, Jim and Isaac demonstrated impressive commitment, maturity and resilience as they worked through the demanding RYA syllabus.

Their new qualification means they will now be able to support the development of our younger pupils on the water, helping to introduce them to sailing in a safe, engaging and inspiring environment.

Isaac reflected on the experience, sharing:

“Jim and I recently passed the Dinghy Instructor course at Windermere’s water sports centre. The experience was incredibly informative, and we are looking forward to progressing on to teach others and continue down the instructor pathway in the future. First off, we would like to say a huge thank you to Ms. Whiteley and Mr. Reedy for all their efforts in organising and coordinating the course: We are both grateful for the opportunity.
The course took us through the RYA instructor method, engaging students effectively, how to run a session and convey the skills we knew to others in a clear and concise manner. It was a challenge to make our knowledge of sailing accessible to beginners and we had to adopt a whole new mindset, which the instructors took us through very well.
The course also covered some games for land that are part of the RYA’s OnBoard scheme that can help to introduce children to the world of sailing in an exciting and safe way. As well as this, we also achieved our racing instructor endorsement, which is especially relevant to our roles in the school sailing team.
Overall the course was a great experience as well as a great learning opportunity that will allow us to progress and help the school in the future.”

We are immensely proud of Jim and Isaac for their hard work and enthusiasm. Their achievement not only marks a significant personal milestone but also strengthens our school’s sailing provision, ensuring that even more pupils can benefit from high-quality instruction on the water.

Congratulations to both students on this superb accomplishment.
