Year 6 Expedition: Coniston Skyline Adventure

30 September 2025

Year 6 embarked on an unforgettable expedition, fully equipped with rucksacks, sleeping bags and provisions for the adventure ahead. The journey began at the historic Three Shires Stone on Wrynose Pass, where the excitement was palpable.

The group ascended Wet Side Edge onto Great Carrs, pausing at the Broad Slack World War II plane crash site to reflect at the memorial dedicated to the crew who lost their lives. The climb continued over Swirl Howe before reaching the summit of Coniston Old Man, offering breath-taking views across the fells.

The descent took the group via Low Water into the Coppermines Valley, where they settled into a mountaineering hut. After preparing and enjoying their dehydrated meals, the children made themselves comfortable in the bunk rooms with sleeping bags. The evening concluded with hot chocolate and games, a perfect end to a challenging day.

Breakfast the next morning consisted of porridge and pain au chocolat’s, fuelling the group for the final walk to Tilberthwaite. From there, the bus collected them and returned them to school for a well-earned lunch.

The Year 6 pupils were brilliant throughout, demonstrating remarkable resilience and a strong sense of achievement. Everyone carried their own equipment, packed their bags in the morning, and met the physical and mental challenges of the expedition with determination. It was a fantastic experience, highlighting teamwork, perseverance and the thrill of exploring the Coniston skyline.

Thank you to Mr Platt and Mrs Roberts for providing our pupils with these incredible experiences!
