RYA Sailing Courses FAQs
What is the RYA?
The Royal Yachting Association (RYA) is the UK’s national governing body for sailing and boating. RYA qualifications are internationally recognised and respected.
Do I need any previous sailing experience?
It depends on the course:
· Start Sailing / Level 1 & 2 – No experience needed
· Competent Crew – No experience required, but helpful
· Day Skipper – Some sailing experience recommended
· Coastal Skipper / Yachtmaster – Previous experience required
What qualification will I receive?
Successful students receive an official RYA certificate, which can be used worldwide and counts toward higher RYA qualifications.
What should I bring with me?
Typically:
· Waterproof jacket and trousers
· Non-slip shoes (deck shoes or trainers)
· Warm layers
· Sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen)
· Sleeping bag (for liveaboard courses)
Most safety equipment is provided by the training centre.
What equipment is provided
· Wetsuits
· Buoyancy aids
· All relevant safety equipment
If students have their own wetsuits then of course do bring them.
Are courses assessed or examined?
Most RYA courses are continuously assessed, not exam-based. Instructors will ensure you meet the required standard before issuing a certificate.
Can I use my RYA certificate abroad?
Yes. RYA qualifications are internationally recognised and widely accepted by charter companies and sailing schools.
What if the weather is bad?
Courses usually run in most weather conditions, as learning to sail in varied conditions is valuable. If conditions are unsafe, alternative training or shore-based learning will be provided.
Can I progress to professional qualifications?
Yes. RYA courses form a clear pathway to professional qualifications such as Yachtmaster Offshore and Commercial Endorsement.
