Year 8 Explore the Literary Landscapes of the Lake District

26 June 2025

As part of their current English unit, Literature and Landscapes, Year 8 pupils have been delving into why the Lake District has served as a wellspring of inspiration for so many writers throughout history. The unit culminated in a memorable day of creativity, reflection, and exploration.

The morning began with pupils showcasing their own creative writing in Crampton Hall, sharing pieces inspired by the natural world and the literary voices they’ve encountered in class. This celebration of student work set the tone for an immersive afternoon in the outdoors at Hodge Howe.

The afternoon excursion was designed to deepen pupils’ engagement with the themes of the unit. From reflecting on their own writing in a natural setting, to hearing Mr. Jones read Wordsworth aloud at the picturesque Wray Castle, the trip brought literature vividly to life.

In addition to literary exploration, pupils also considered the environmental and social impact of tourism on the Lake District, encouraging a thoughtful appreciation of both the landscape and its place in the wider world.

It was a day filled with inspiration, learning, and enjoyment, and the experience sparked meaningful reflections that have continued to enrich lessons back in the classroom.
