Year 9 Step into the Limelight in Science
16 January 2026
Yesterday, Year 9 pupils quite literally stepped into the limelight as they explored how theatres were originally illuminated by heating limestone to produce lime. This hands-on practical brought chemistry to life while linking science to history.
Pupils thermally decomposed limestone to produce quicklime, then carefully dissolved the product in water to make limewater. They went on to test their limewater by bubbling carbon dioxide from their exhaled breath through a straw. The result was a cloudy white precipitate, formed as insoluble calcium carbonate was produced.
Through this engaging experiment, Year 9 successfully investigated and understood the limestone cycle, reinforcing key chemical concepts through practical application. A fantastic example of curiosity, teamwork and scientific thinking in action!
