Winter Walking and Climbing Expedition 2024
4 March 2024
The Windermere School Adventure Team recently took six pupils on an expedition to the Cairngorns in Scotland. The pupils focus was to fine-tune their winter walking and winter climbing skills.
Day 1
The climbing team are off to a fantastic start and have completed a mixture of The Grooved Rib and Crotched Gully which made for a 2* Grade 3 in beautiful conditions under the expert guidance of our Head of Outdoor Education, Mr Platt. What a phenomenal experience for our students!
The walkers had a fabulous first day too. The amazing weather meant they were able to do a full round of the Northern Carries – Cairn Lochan, Stob Coire an t-Sneachda and the Munro-Cairn Gorm. This is a long 12km day with over 800m of ascent.
Day 2
Mr Platt challenged Oscar to his first proper mixed route today and increased the grade to IV,5. Lots of lessons learned and a great day!
Day 3
What a difference a day can make in the Cairngorms….Overnight snow and a strong South Easterly wind transported lots of snow onto the Apron leading to the climbs. Another climbing team in the Corrie triggered a small avalanche, and this, along with reports from teams walking out, was enough to decide that it was not a day to go climbing. Therefore, the team stayed together for much of the day, playing in the snow, and a few battled their way to 1141m via Fiachaill a’ Choire Chais then returned to catch up with the others. A brilliant trip to the Cairngorms with six lovely pupils.
Well done all, we are incredibly proud of each of you!
