Year 8’s Unforgettable Outdoor Adventure in Borrowdale
20 September 2024
This week, our lovely Year 8 pupils embarked on an unforgettable adventure in the stunning Borrowdale Valley, blessed with glorious weather. The sunny skies, warm temperatures, and absence of wind provided perfect conditions for outdoor exploration and personal growth.
After school finished on Monday, we made our way to Borrowdale Hostel, excited for the days ahead. A delicious meal greeted us upon arrival, and after settling in, the evening was spent playing parachute games. It was a fantastic way to unwind, bond as a group and begin the adventure.
Tuesday was our big mountain day, and what a day it was! We set off to tackle Glaramara, a beautiful Wainwright mountain standing at 783 meters. Everyone reached the summit, which was a great achievement, and the weather was so kind that a short scramble onto the peak was possible. For a few eager adventurers, the excitement didn’t stop there—six pupils chose to press on to Allen Crags, descending from this second Wainwright for an extended hike.
On the way back, the group took a quick dip in the river near the youth hostel, making the most of the gorgeous sunshine. It was a refreshing end to a challenging and exhilarating day in the fells.
Wednesday morning saw us take on the thrilling via ferrata at Honister Slate Mine. The pupils embraced the challenge, pushing themselves and each other through this exhilarating climbing experience. Spirits were high, and the celebration of Emma’s birthday added a special touch to the day. We even sang “Happy Birthday” and enjoyed cake inside the mine—a memory she won’t soon forget!
We returned to school on Wednesday afternoon, tired but happy, with plenty of stories to share and a sense of accomplishment.
This trip wasn’t just about adventure; it was also a chance to get to know new pupils and to build stronger bonds within the group. The experience also tied into the Round Square framework, with pupils reflecting on how they demonstrated and achieved some of the new merit system’s discoveries.
Overall, this was an unforgettable adventure in Borrowdale, filled with new experiences, personal growth and lasting memories. We look forward to more adventures like this in the future!
