Nestled on a hillside within the Lake District National Park, a landscape that inspired writers such as Beatrix Potter and William Wordsworth, Windermere School enjoys one of the most picturesque views in the Lake District, and arguably, the best school view in the world. Students often tell us that when they join the school, there is a tangible sense of being somewhere truly unique and incredibly special.

This appointment presents a wonderful opportunity for an outstanding leader to join Windermere School. We have an established heritage and set of traditions that have been developed over the last 157 years, but as a School, we have an eye on the future. The successful candidate will build on the strong foundations in place and with the full support of the Governing Body and School community, take the School on the next stage of its journey.

“I think we have got the best deal in the whole country.” – Current Parent

We offer students an education that combines academic achievement with a host of extra-curricular activities, all underpinned by a spirit of adventure. Our traditions and ethos create a supportive community within the school, where strong relationships exist between staff and students. Each student is known as an individual and this allows us to offer exceptional pastoral care.

The location is exquisite, the school really is a hidden gem.” – Current Parent

Our three woodland campuses which total over 50 acres of Lake District countryside, contain all of our academic, boarding and sporting facilities, including the school’s Royal Yachting Association (RYA) Watersports Centre, Hodge Howe, which is situated on the shores of Windermere.

It is a place where people care and without question the support that the students get allows them to achieve amazing results.” – Current Parent

Junior School (ages 3-11)

The Elleray Campus is where the Windermere adventure begins.

Our beautiful setting provides each child with the space to flourish. With adventurous learning at the heart of our provision, the children learn vital skills that they bring back into the classroom and take with them through life.  Whether they are taking part in Forest School, den building, reading books in caves, or performing on our outdoor stage, there is both challenge and enjoyment. There is a warmth, vibrancy and kindness at Elleray that makes it a very special place to learn.

Senior School (ages 11-18)

The adventure continues at Browhead Campus.

By providing a safe and traditional environment, students are given every opportunity to become the very best version of themselves; able to grow in confidence, develop their personalities, discover their strengths and excel academically, leaving us equipped for a life beyond the school gates.

Our students are encouraged to have the confidence and resilience to stand up for what is right and a desire to reach out to others. This balance of confidence and compassion is not on any syllabus, yet it is central to everything we do and embedded in our School’s aims and values.
