Maths Challenge

7 May 2021

Year 9 to 11 took part in the Intermediate Maths Challenge, a national maths competition that tests creative thinking and problem solving without recourse to a calculator.  48 of our pupils took part in years 9 – 11, with an amazing number of certificates won:

  • Bronze: Bethany S, Tom J, Jing Y, Zoe S-D and Jack J in Year 10; and Tania P and Murray D in Year 11
  • Silver: Punn C in Year 9 and Daniel L in Year 10
  • Gold: Lisha W in Year 10 and Varya G in Year 11.

Three students, Punn, Lisha and Varya, even qualified for the follow-on “Kangaroo” round.  Despite being unable to be in the same room, these three students spent a few evenings together online helping each other prepare.

All three students performed brilliantly, but special mention must go to Lisha W in Year 10, who received a Merit in the Pink Kangaroo (competing against Year 11) and Punn C, who received a Merit and an extremely high score in the Grey Kangaroo (for Year 9).  Andre Y also received his certificate for his Merit in the 2020 Kangaroo.

The Year 10 Maths Feast is a team maths challenge organised by Lancaster University and the Advanced Mathematics Support program.  As our Year 10 students had performed so well in the UKMT Individual Maths Challenge, we were able to enter two teams in this year’s Team event.

The questions were tough and required flexibility, teamwork and ingenuity.  Congratulations to:

Team 1: Bethany S, Tom J, Lisha W, Laura B.

Team 2: Jing Y, Zoe S-D, Jack J, Thomas N-R.
